To be a Christian in 1st century Ephesus, under Roman rule, is dangerous. The arena awaits, a background threat. . . one that candidates for baptism are reminded of. The decision might cost them their lives. All it takes is the refusal to burn a pinch of incense and declare that Emperor Domitian is lord and god, and Roman ire declares they are subversive, rebels. Jews are exempt from this edict, but not the followers of the Way. Sometimes Jews will denounce these Christians. They have, after all, turned from the traditions of the fathers, to follow the sect established by an untrained country preacher. Join Benjamin, great-grandson of the Apostle John, as he discovers the faith of his family is not enough. He needs to make the choice for himself. He faces another choice. . . After his father is attacked in the market place, should he help in his father's shop, or keep his commitment to accompany his great-grandfather, John, as he prepares to set out to walk around the other six fellowships in the Roman province of Asia Minor? Smyrna, Pergamum, Sardis, Thyatira, Philadelphia and Laodicea. Meet the cunning false brethren as they try to lure people into their Gnostic beliefs. Walk in the shoes of the first believers, see how they lived, what they battled with, and how they coped with the choices and challenges of daily life. Early Christianity comes to life in this 'fiction-based-on-fact' book.

I loved this book and will read it again. It was easy to follow and so descriptive, you felt as if you were really there. We have all learned in history of the persecutions of the early Christians, but this book really brought to life what they went through every day. It really made you think about how you yourself would respond in similar circumstances. It was easy to follow each of the characters and actually prompted some research on my part regarding historical data I had previously not known.I will be looking forward to the next sequel in paperback form. Hoping it will be soon.

Hold the Faith Apostle John Series Susan M B Preston 9781514442876 Books Reviews
This book by Susan Preston is a touching story that makes you think about what it would have been like to be a believer in the era of the 1st century church. Walk with the apostle John and his great-grandson as their faith is tempered in the events which followed the death and resurrection of Jesus.
For the past several weeks I have been reading this story during our evening family reading time. What an impression this made on our children. The story, as seen through the eyes of the young hero, gave them a new perspective on those events. Each night it was they who asked for me to continue with the story.
I believe this story offers a wonderful perspective on the events which shaped the direction of the early church. With anticipation we wait for the next book in this series.
Have you ever wondered what life was like in the early years of the Christian Church, when believers lived under Roman rule and faced tests on every side? This fast- moving tale brings that time to life as we follow the story of Benjamin, the great-grandson of the apostle John, the last living apostle of Christ. As a young man living in Ephesus, raised in the Christian life, he faces tests of his faith at home and on his travels with the apostle John around the various church groups in Asia Minor. And just as his great-grandfather begins writing his account of Christ's life, Benjamin faces his greatest trial.
This book is historically researched but never overwhelms with detail. it is easy to read and really made me think of how i would act in similar circumstances. This is the first book in the series, so I look forward to reading more about Benjamin, John and their fellow- believers. A wonderful, inspiring story.
“Hold the Faith” is an interesting story of Christian life as it may have been in biblical times. Although the characters are fictional, they are vividly described in detail and the reader can easily imagine the experiences of their lives the joys, the hatred and cruelty of others towards Christians.
The descriptive scenes of this era are depicted as though they were realistic to what I would have imagined that it may have been like to live in those tumultuous times. The story draws you in to want to know more.
Readers of all ages may find this interesting for book group discussions and religion class projects as well.
Due to Mrs. Preston’s take on the story, I can see this book turned into a movie because of the story line and it’s take on Christianity and religion. Its uniqueness has added more to the story than what we’ve previously have been taught and it has created curiosity for me wonder what surprises a sequel will hold.
HOLD THE FAITH by Susan M.B. Preston Apostle John Series
Don't you just love historical fiction? It has a way of helping us understand history in a way that reading a nonfiction work just cannot do. A gifted writer can flood dry history with just the right amount of "rain" to make it spring to life in our imaginations.
HOLD THE FAITH is a book that I read slowly, snatch reading through the holidays. Had I read it more quickly, I think that I would have felt the rising tension even more dramatically. For me, it was rather like taking a journey not only to another place and time, but another culture—one with similarities to our Christian culture, but only in whom we serve in worship.
Although there was an underlying tension throughout the novel because of the threat of the Romans, the story was not flashy or stressful but satisfying and enlightening. I found the descriptions of the marketplaces, the fellowships, and even what went into writing and copying the scriptures to be fascinating.
I found myself thinking about my own faith in Jesus Christ. What sacrifices would I make? Would I be strong enough in my faith to stand before persecution? Only in God's strength!

This is a book I could not stop reading, I loved every page, its like being there and enduring their trials, sadness, love and happiness as an early Christian family. It is very family friendly I read it to my grand daughter who got involved each evening as we went back in time an felt as though we were with them.
